Kinetic Workshop with Brigel Gjoka

Monday, March 10 from 5:30 - 7:00 PM

Brigel Gjoka, is an Albanian-born choreographer, dancer, and dance teacher, with a career spanning over two decades. He received his training at the Tirana School of Ballet and the Rosella Hightower in France. Between 2006 and 2010, he danced with Ballet de l’Opéra National du Rhin, Staatstheater Mainz, and the Nederlands Dans Theater.

Brigel’s Kinetic workshop (mechanical energy and distribution of effort in choreographic composition) will explore the following:

Energy is the thread that binds us to the natural world around us. As dancers, we have the unique ability to harness this energy and use it to create movements that are both precise and expressive. In this workshop, we will delve deep into the mechanics of our own bodies, exploring how energy flows through every joint and muscle. We will investigate the interplay between effort and ease, questioning how much force is necessary to initiate movement and how to achieve a state of effortless motion. Through a variety of choreographic techniques, participants will analyze each step, learning to understand the mechanics of movement and how to create their own unique choreographic language.

Dancehall with Nina Flagg

March 17 - March 22, 2025

This introductory workshop series delves into the vibrant world of Dancehall, a dynamic social dance and music culture originating in Kingston, Jamaica. The root of this provocative and highly codified Jamaican dance tradition can be traced back as early as the 1970’s and has since permeated global pop culture.

Throughout the workshops, participants will engage in the diverse techniques, styles, and trends of Old School, Middle School, and New School Dancehall. We will  address history and cultural context, as well as gender politics through the embodiment of female Bruk Out/Rude Gyal style and male Party Dance and Shott style.

This workshop series is open to all levels, dancers and non-dancers alike. Please wear a  cross trainer sneaker and non-restrictive clothing that gives you full range of motion and makes you feel like your sexiest self! Bring water and a towel.

Due to the provocative nature of the movement and explicit language and music content, no participants or observers under the age of 18 will be permitted.

Nina Flagg joins us in St. Louis from March 17-22, 2025 for one week only!

Take a single class ($18) or sign up for the whole series at a rate of $15/class. Plus, don’t miss a special talkback from 1:00 - 1:30 PM on Saturday, March 22 after Nina’s last class of the series!
